ALAN SCORSE provided the breakthrough and Ron Tange the bolter in an interesting day for local trainers at Broadmeadow yesterday.
After the first three events went to visiting trainers, Scorse's Prince Covet ($8.50) upstaged his more-fancied rivals in the race four 1200-metre maiden handicap. But the biggest shock of the day came in the next, also a 1200m maiden handicap, when veteran Newcastle trainer Tange scored his first win at his home track for 10 years.San Tango ($21), with Linda Meech aboard, finished too strongly for $3.30 favourite Exaltation to land his 84-year-old trainer victory. The three-year-old filly returned $38.50 on the TAB.Prince Covet downed Subtle Cove ($4) by 21/4 lengths and $2.40 favourite Red Hot Prince was a long neck further back. The four-year-old gelding won in impressive style from gate 14 after a faultless ride from apprentice Josh Parr. And Scorse, whose charge paid $12.50 with the TAB, said the performance was thanks to Parr for more than one reason."I wasn't surprised, not at all," Scorse said about the win. "He's always had ability. He's a full brother to Sir Covet, who I've won some races with, but he's always been a bit immature."Josh said after his last run that he thought blinkers might help, and they worked perfectly today. They've changed him completely."The success was the first in a double for Parr, who partnered the Peter Snowden-trained Dealers ($2.80) to a 11/2-length victory over favourite Captain Chaos ($2.50) in the next race, a rating 76 event over 1200m.Earlier, Gary Portelli trained a quinella in the race three maiden (1600m), with wide-running favourite Aristocratico ($2.60) beating Basilica ($9) by a short head.Wyong trainer Kim Waugh grabbed the last winner, Through The Field, with Andrew Gibbons in the saddle.
